Tonight, as another Sunday evening arrives, the herald is once again drawn to the hallowed halls of Red Gate—which always have delectable shows on Sundays—with the promise of three offerings being presented. All are repeat offerings, so the anticipation for what will surely be a flail-filled evening is high.
WACK
Only a handful of bands in this city can lay down a dance rock good times like WACK. Their infectiously groovy jams get my feet moving, a whole set of songs designed to get out on that floor.
It has been a while since their last offering, but this quintet has a new guitarist who is absolute fire. Their style and sound fit perfectly with the band’s vibe, giving me the squiggles when they made all the noise, hitting just that correct mark with real passion.
Tight rhythm section featuring a murderous bassist who played all the funk with just the grooviest, danciest shit. The drums locked in right next to them, tight and smooth, controlling the pace nicely. Source of all things flailing.
Great energy from the band, upbeat and groovy rockin, seeped into the crowd, where several people got lost in the flailing. By the end, many in the crowd bounced to their good times. Such a fun set.
CHEAP FLAVOR
Making their fourth offering, this trio brought all the high energy and picked up where WACK had left off. In their matching teal Eastern European gangster tracksuits, they sweat their way through their blistering psycho blues jams that never fail to get maximum flail from me.
They are backed by a free-flowing drummer with serious style. The drummer uses the entire kit in a flow of limbs, intertwining with the tight and interesting bass, flicking off killer little riffs all over. Their rhythm section is second to none. They create just the choicest grooves together.
The frontman/guitarist is always so amped up, with a high octave burn maintained for the whole set, which is engaging and amusing. They have an excellent command of the stage and a wellspring of that desired delicious energy.
The crowd wasted little time getting going for this one and were moving from note one. Great crowd engagement on this one.
THE HAUSPLANTS
The final offering on the night came from this trio making their first offering in a while, with a solid, tight set of psych indie rock. It would get up and rocking a few times, though never too fast. Always a steady, fun, bopping pace
The lead singer/bassist had a great voice, which carried good and solid control when getting loud. They had lots of energy up there, moving around the stage with comfort and ease, and they were clearly having a blast.
The deliciously noisy guitar with all the sounds was a delight. A massive pedalboard allowing them to do all sorts of noisy pretty things with their geetar. The contrast between their noise and the clean bass was sexy.
All sorts of exciting and fun riffs throughout this offering to get a good flail on, and while the crowd had thinned some, it meant more room for the rest of us.
He was pleased with tonight’s offering.
