24-01-04 | Red Gate | Twinn, Muppet Boys, Strathcona

Kicking off this Thursday evening at Red Gate was a band making their fourth offering, the trio TWINN. Their blend of grungy punk was the perfect helping to get the feet started.

They started a little shaky, but after a few songs, they found their groove. The vocals were very much the mumbled of grunge, accompanied by more than a few killer bass riffs, squealy fun from the guitar, and despite a couple missed cues, solid drums throughout, all worked really well.

The small crowd became more engaged as the set went on, where the choice songs were. Had me spinning and flopping all over the place. Great opener.

Next was a repeat offering from the exciting MUPPET BOYS, who were tight and energized dosing out their garage rock good times.

Absolute killer on the guitar, full of wonderfully squealy noises, making me all squiggly in those solos. The lead singer/guitarist was comfortable up there and in the pocket.

With great riffs and wonderfully smashy drums, the bass and drums clicked perfectly. Had my feet moving along with the crowd, who had been sufficiently warmed up, even busting out a mosh pit.

Their originals were great, yet for the fourth time, I complain about another band covering the overdone ‘I Wanna Be Your Dog.’ Everyone needs to stop.

Finally, we received the first-time offering for the night, the quartet STRATHCONA, who gave us a wicked blend of proggy/psych/stoner/glam rock that finished the night off wonderfully.

Every now and then, a rhythm section blows me away. The bass had great tones and was groovy and tight with those drums, which were outstanding. They read each other really well, and the foundation they gave each song was gorgeous.

Those fucking drums. Wow. Instantly recognized the drummer from an offering at Lanalou’s last year. So dynamic and exciting, never playing anything close to boring. Understated yet always present, the balance they struck was so impressive. Watching a drummer who could showboat to a remarkable degree simply fitting into the songs is gorgeous. So fucking good.

He was pleased with tonight’s offerings.
