23-09-22 | Red Gate | Warmbelly, The Thing, Selfist, Pet Blessings

Making their debut offering at Red Gate and only their second show, the quartet WARMBELLY offered up a slice of indie rock jams full of groovy funk thanks to the bassist.

Also from SPECTRA, they are never content to stay in one place, all over their fretboard, laying down sick tracks. Clicking nicely with the drums, they would orchestrate perfect stop/pause/starts, always keeping me guessing.

The band commented at the end that they had played all their songs way fast, which I love to hear. Push that shit. Make me move.

Next, it was a pared-down THE THING, usually a quartet, but now only a trio. With their lead singer off doing life stuff, the guitarist took over the vocals. This is their second offering; their first was ten months ago, and they delivered again.

Thrashy, delicious punk was what they offered and it was precisely what my earholes wanted. Hard and fast, focused like a fucking laser, they went hard despite the drummer wearing a wrist wrap, unsure if their wrist was broken or not. That’s fucking punk.

Next was the band kicking off their tour, SELFIST, and they fucking killed it. Thick, massive sound, with great vocals climbing over it and coming in strong.

The bassist did it for me here. Kept my groove going the whole set. Playing their five-string fretless like a toy, murdering the entire time. Fucking gorgeous.

The vocalist descended into the pit a few times, stirring things up in an already rabid mass of humanity that ramped up as the set went on.

Finally, we received a bi-annual offering from PET BLESSINGS. I have seen their past three, and every time, I am left with a sense of realization as to why I love this band so much.

A local supergroup, PB put forth a high-energy, tight offering led by one of my favorite screamers in the game. Being screamed at by them is a fucking delight. The intensity and focus, pummeling my earholes, I relish it so much I moved over in front of the speakers to hear it better.

Being Friday, I finished at the Fox Cabaret, where non-stop disco fed his sadistic pleasure with my torment.

Infect the others
