Starting this night of killer jams at the Astoria Hotel was the duo NEW AGE DOOM offering their delicious taste of instrumental hard stoner/noise rock.
The guitarist and their fifty-seven pedals made all the thick and loud noises aided by their modded guitar that has a big fat string on so no low end is lost. They layered all that noise over the thickest, thumpiest drums in the city.
The drummer was an absolute beast, destroying their simple yet effective kit. They smashed those things with precision propelled by aggression. Every time they hit something, it was massive and thick.
By the end, they were vibrating in my stomach, deep into my soul.
Next, we received the second offering from the quartet SMUSH, who dished up a delicious dose of dreamy shoegaze. Jams that take you on rides, ebbs and flows, with vocals buried slightly behind the music, make the entire set feel like a dream.
With constant noise from the guitarists and keyboard, there was always something to be tickling the earholes. The drums provided the floor for the flailing, always finding myself following them sexy drums all around the floor.
Next was the first of what I hope are many offerings from the monstrous quartet BAD ACID. Instrumental heavy stoner rock, they were massive and thick, dosing out song after song of just killer stoner jams.
Big smashy drums oversaw this cacophony of noise that would take you on a droning walk, then smash you into the sky with kick-ass speed and heaviness. There are colossal head-banging, stomping moments throughout this spectacular set.
Finally, it was the sweet double drummer sexy time that is HIGHLAND EYEWAY and their primarily instrumental stoner rock that managed to out-thick the entire lineup.
Having two drummers helps with that, for sure, and watching them play off each other or take turns and then come together again, is so fucking rad.
With that guitar doling out beautiful solos, all the squiggly goodness pulled me in and had me moving.
Another fantastic set of offerings to please Him for another day.
