23-07-26 | The Lido | Brain Zaps, Chalcedony

It’s a rare thing, but on this Wednesday evening, I find myself experiencing a new venue in the form of The Lido, a sweet little spot along Broadway.

It was a decent-sized place, sectioned into various sitting areas plus a patio. However, the pillars peppered all over would kill the sight lines to the stage from many spots. Not the best venue if you are expecting a good-sized crowd, but perfect for a small gathering.

With a small stage tucked away in the back, it was the first offering from BRAIN ZAPS, who started this short evening off—a duo, with guitar on vocals and a serious thumper behind them.

The drummer wailed on that snare with vigor, tight and snappy, providing a massive sound for the frontman to do their thing over. Thanks to that huge sound, this duo never sounded hollow, and the lead vocals had a considerable voice that cut through beautifully.

Had me going wonderfully with their hard groovy rock. They never got fast, but always at that sweet groove spot, they offered a very satisfying offering.

The only other offering of the evening came in the form of CHALCEDONY, a quartet making their second offering with a dose of grunge/indie rock yumminess.

The set starts with the more simple, straightforward stuff in the indie vein, but they start upping the rock levels as things progress. The drummer begins to get more involved, adding more fills, and the riffs from the bass click in and get more interesting.

Great vocals throughout came through clearly, even with the guitar making all sorts of lovely squealing noises.

While the crowd grew some for this second offering, there was still ample room on that floor for all the flailing I and a handful of others participated in. As it went on, I locked in increasingly with those beautiful drums. What a fun set.

He was pleased with this short but delicious offering.

Infect the others
