As this dreary streak of rain-soaked nights continues into the end of yet another weekend, the herald has been invited to witness a collection of offerings at Green Auto that promises Him satisfaction.
Coming in from the now cool evening air, he is greeted by a decent-sized crowd milling about, anticipating the evening of ear-pleasing music that is about to unfold.
INCOMPLETENESS
Kicking the night off, we received a duo, bass, and drums, who blended a desert/stoner rock vibe with a deep funk into an impressive set.
They claim to have not played in roughly fourteen months, though they definitely spent the time practicing, as they were on point. The bassist was on absolute fire, as they were all over their five-string. They always had grooves heavily laced with funk, but a dark, deep funk best described as doom funk. Impressive to watch.
Drums were tight, real smashy, and kept things moving and shifting. Had me grooving and sliding one minute, head banging the next, but always a sexy groove to accompany.
A group up front was flailing and grooving along with me, adding to the energy flowing around that floor. It was a great start to the night.
TUFF DUZT
This quartet set down an offering full of old-school metal that reminded me of the days when metal was all spikes and leather. High speed and squealing, full of “fuck shit up” metal attitude, this was a delicious blast from the past.
The singer and bassist wore leather and studs, channeling Rob Halford. At the same time, the guitarist embodied all that is Lemmy while rocking out on a flying V guitar, a staple of the era.
There was so much damn shredding to get me squiggling all over that floor. Neither guitarist could be accused of sitting back and chilling, as it was noise and squealing for days on this one.
The frontman was engaging, and they played the persona nicely, bringing an attitude and style that brought the whole look and sound together.
It’s just balls-to-the-wall metal, an assault of good old-school metal. They even covered a KISS song, which was the second time this weekend and probably the first time in years I have heard KISS.
The same group remained engaged, flailing again at this fun offering. While the overall crowd had thickened, very few others engaged.
MOLTEN LAVA
The final treat on the night, and the band who brought me out, this duo features one of the best rhythm duos in the city in @tristan and @lordrunningclam.No matter which of the various projects they play in -and there are several-, the connection between these two, how well they read each other, is nothing short of spectacular.
They are so fucking thick, especially the bass tone which was just thunderous. It was so distorted and massive, everything had a killer groove attached to it; even when they played at breakneck speed, they never lost that groove.
They would also employ these breakdown sections, where the two played simple yet staggered patterns, giving an off-kilter feeling, before busting back into some sexy groove.
The drums were on absolute point. Playful at times, yet monstrous and smashy at another, they were a fucking treat to watch. One song, in particular, had a section where the drummer played an increasingly faster rhythm using just the hi-hat and ride, fucking beautiful.
They both shared the vocal duties, and the in-between-song banter was hilarious and engaging, another sign of their strong friendship and connection.
He was once again pleased with this night’s offerings.
